| U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's brownfields program has awarded nearly $600,000 in federal grants to help clean up the long-vacant Allied Leather tannery site on East Street in Penacook. This was formally announced in June 2011 by U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen's office. |

| The grant will be used to to remove about 1,000 tons of chromium-contaminated soil and more than 5,500 tons of coal ash-contaminated soil from the site. |
